- We recorded one track in Stockholm yesterday. Song is called "These Scars." I don´t know if that is going to be used anywhere, but we must record new tracks when we have time, so we will always have something new ready to be released.
- Our last single "Why Did You Do It?" sold 166,022 copies last week, maybe it could have sold more if we had made good video for that.

Danny Keene Roadmap

This handbook aims for the starters and it may offer some insight to the advanced and intermediate artists. I suggest you to read. Information that you will obtain with this handbook will be helpful for you in long term, it won’t make you rich or famous in a matter of days but surely in some months. ;)

Introduction:

For starters do not spend time or money for useless skills.

Take two skills that you can use at stage such as instrument skills or dancing skills, Basic Showmanship, Sex Appeal, any kind of Music Skill Type, and Basic Yoga. Total cost of these books are 10,000$ in average and as you will learn one skill from your mother, you’ll need 8,000$ in average. It may sound too much though do not forget the fact that reaching five stars in these skills will take two months. If you can find a job with 500-600$ salary you can save money for another skill while mastering one.

As an alternative, there are some people whom will teach you skills and pay you for learning. You will occasionally come across these kinds of topics in General English and General Turkish Popomundo forums. If you can find such a teacher, you will both have the luxury of learning the skill for free and you will have enough cash to buy other skill books as well as cash to pay the tour expenses. I suggest you not to be covetous in this stage. If your aim is to have a music career, doing this only once will give you the required material allowance and you would not have the need to take money from your artist. You may get more lessons and earn thousands of dollars though trust me, the time you will loose is more important. If you read this handbook and do what is told, you will learn hundreds of thousand dollars in a few months and you will earn millions in six months. After a year, you’ll learn that you do not need money that much. :D

Personal Attributes:

There are five types of Personal Attributes. These will effect your life in every aspect from daily operations to concerts.

These attributes are:

Musicality: If you like to be a musician, I would say this is the very most important attribute you will ever have. This attributes effects; Stage Performance, Recordings, Composing Songs and everything about musical lifestyle. It is important that Musicality Attribute to have in first two priorities in attributes that you will develop.

Intelligence: Intelligence attribute will be helpful in improving skills, learning speed, teaching speed (it will be very important in future), record producing, video direction, and in many fields.

Charm: Charm Attribute makes your fans to be crazy about you. It is a very important skill in stage.

Looks: Like its name, it defines your outlook. Though it is not a great problem that can not be solved with a few plastic surgery operations, so I would not suggest you to spend too much point in it.

Voice: I guess it is the attribute that is most argued over. I believe it has many benefits, and in future there will be many more. Though if you had spent all your newbie points on this attribute, do not consider making a solo career. ;) It would not hurt to have someone with perfect Voice attribute on a balanced artist.

Artist, Tours, Musical Lifestyle:

You have improved your skills. Improving your skills took your two months. In these two months, you have met people, you have laughed, and you have enjoyed yourself. Now, it is time to get a little serious. Now, it is the ideal time for you to step into the world of music.

You may have joined a artist or created one beforehand. Now, ask yourself these questions:

- Do I want to be a part of this artist?

- Should I make a solo career? Or should I hang out with someone? (The advantages and disadvantages of solo career will be explained later.)

• Do other members of my artist have the same ambition as I do? (Be sure that others in your artist have same goals as you have because the fact that when you wish to play for the top and others do not have same ambition as you will cause problems on the long run.)

• Do I have same level of maturity as other members of the artist?

If you can not get positive answers for these kinds of questions neither waste your own time nor waste their time. If needed, leave the artist, get into another artist, find yourself other band mates, or have a solo career. Choice is yours. But, think beforehand. Do not leave the artist after 4 or 5 months and waste your efforts.

Considering that you have made your choice about your artist. Now, we shall proceed to the second stage, the repertoire. Like you have noticed, I did not give information about the skills to compose a song beforehand. Because as these are unimportant? No, certainly they have a great deal of importance. Though when you are about to have your first tour without being known in anywhere, nothing will matter if you had played perfect songs or not so I did not give the priority to the song composing at that stage. For starters, use cover songs. It is no shame for a artist that is around for two months to use cover songs. There are people in very high places with mere cover songs.

How would you choose the songs that you will cover? Radio lists? No, god forsakes! Check the artists on the top of the list according to your music type. They normally release two singles for each Popomundo year. Find the ones who had released singles recently. And add the songs from their last single to your repertoire. Do not waste time with the most popular songs, as the most popular songs will lose their popularity in a very short time. If you use the songs around 15-20% popularity, you can use them without a problem for two months. Use 10-12 songs in your repertoire. You do not need more. If Dominant Instruments do match, that is sweet, otherwise have no worries.

Now it is time to oversee the tour. In these two months, you do not need to move away from city. You may have one or two concerts to get additional experience point. Though when you have completed the essential skills and mastered them, every day you spend in that city is a waste. You can tour like stars! ;)

There are two essential aspects of touring that you have to pay attention.

1. You should have concert in all cities in 56 days. (1 popomundo year)

2. Having concert in cities which are connected through interstate highways.

It may seem frightening at the beginning but have no fear, you’ll get used to it in time. Open the Popomundo map and decide on the starting city as well as starting date and go on through the cities.

Follow the cities and assign dates for each of them. If there are more than six hours of time spent on travelling between cities, give an extra day to rest. The most important thing about dates is when you first request invitations you should give at least 15-20 days between the day of invitation and day of concert. Later, increase this time interval to 56 days.

What keeps you alive in this busy concert program is your Yoga Skills. If your yoga skill has not reached five stars, you should have Chill Out performance ambition in order not to have any health problems.

Easy way of arranging concerts is submitting the date of concert as well as ticket price to the Company Forum. Language of Company Forum is English so you have to submit your requests in English. If you do not have trust in your English, you could use the basic template given below.

After submission, you’ll start to get invitations. Check the date and accept accordingly.

On first days of your tour, you need to hitchhike in order to travel so after a concert, you and your band mates need to head to the interstate highway and change their priorities to hitch hike.

Through the halfway of your tour, you will probably get a tour bus. After then, things start to be smoother.

Do not distribute the cash of the artist so you will have your tour bus sooner than later.

Your artist is arranged, your repertoire has been completed and your tour has arranged. Now you can have your first serious steps into the world of music.

Concerts:

When it comes to the world of music, concerts become one of the most important aspects of the life as well as the part that you have to devote most of your attention.

A concert could be divided into three parts:

- Songs

- Events

- Encore

We have talked about songs above. We can arrange repertoire by using cover songs. As we start to have our own singles, we can change cover songs with our own songs in order to have both good sales and have a better performance. You should ideally play 12 songs in a concert (including encore), do not go below 8 songs though. Quality and popularity of a song are the most essential aspects that effect stars of a song. It would be fine if you make queue according to those two aspects. If you arrange songs according to the stars they get in previous concert, you'll get more efficiency from that concert.

I do not suggest you to play songs with red (negative) popularity. The only exception is if you are aiming for a repertoire without cover songs (as your ultimate goal is this) and if you do not have enough songs, you could play the songs with red (negative) popularity. In any case if you spend some more effort and renew those songs, it would be the best for you. With a good planning you can renew songs before their popularity drops to red.

The Events is a very important field that requires a very refined planning. Events are divided into two fields:

- Generic

- Genre Related

Generic events give you a wide spectrum of options. Some of them require Basic Manners and result in good outcomes. The very important point is that general events also require Basic Showmanship. If you improve your Basic Showmanship skill to five stars and if you have enough stars in required skill, it would be no problem for you to have four stars event.

Events which are specific to genres are different than generic events as they require music type history instead of general showmanship skill. The bright side of these kinds of events is they are evaluated not according to the the artists genre but your skills. It is quite alright for a pop artist with required skills and heavy metal knowledge to slaughter a goat on stage. ;)

The importance in here is keeping balance in progress. You can have a fine event portfolio by making a plan with the events you can make with your current skills and adding new events by learning new skills. You can be able to impress the audience in no time by in artist division of labour.

The important part in events is that event number can not exceed the number of songs plus two (Including entering stage and leaving stage.) It is possible for you not to use enter stage event at low ambition levels though I am not sure about if it has any disadvantages or not, try and see.) The most important thing in events is using best event (crank up the volume for starters) just before leaving the stage and keeping health and morale of members whom performs events, at high levels.

Encore is a complex subject. There are a lot of factors that you should consider such as your fame in a city, current mood of audience, popularity and quality of the song that you are playing. Using trial and error method on this subject would be the best thing for you. You should pay attention that each encore should be more popular and in better quality than the encore played beforehand. If you are using more events than songs (Like I have explained above, two more than songs), you should add events after Encore songs so if the song wouldn’t be played, you would not loose score as event drops as well as song so event and song ratio remains at acceptable levels.

Songs:

Songs are maybe the most discussed and yet to be completely solved part of Popmundo history. Nobody exactly knows what to do while composing songs, though everyone has an idea but it is impossible to point an absolute truth. The reason behind this occurrence is that the randomness is a decisive factor in composing a song. Two songs composed almost in same conditions may vary greatly. That’s why I will give my own opinions and beliefs about composing songs in this section. You can assume that each sentence written in here stars with an huge emphasis of “In my opinion.”

Required things for composing a song is basic composing, basic lyrics and advance composing (composing sing along, anthems and such) skills and musicality attribute. Some claim that advanced composing skills are non-essential. There are some song examples composed without advanced composing skills. Though in my opinion, it shouldn’t be risked. In my opinion, some characters are more successful in composing songs (some are easier to make friends, some are healthier so there are some personal factors).

Starting to Compose a Song: Claims about this part are that character should be in a comfy place (home or hotel), health should be high and if possible 100% and morale is not that important. As I am agreement in claim about health levels, I do not have an absolute idea about other aspects of song composing. In my opinion starting to compose at home or a hotel would not be a problem for you.

Updates: There are some claims about in what conditions are the updates happen and how do they effect the result of song. Some claim that the result of the song is set at the very beginning of composing. I believe the conditions of updates are also important. It is better to have high health at the moment of updates. It may also be important to be in right place at the updates. Also there are some claims that character should be at home or a hotel. My very own instinctual opinion is that different places may have different effects. As an example it may be advantageous to be in a bar while composing the melody and to be in a quiet place while composing the lyrics.

Finishing the Song; finishing the song is another field with a lot of debate. Some claim that waiting for a few updates after song’s melody and lyrics are 100% is advantageous and some claim that this is just hearsay. My bandmate who had written the best songs, keep the song a few updates after it is done. But I have yet to see any difference when I kept the song after it is done. It is up to you. There are also some claims that finishing place should be a home or a hotel as well.

Seeds: Seeds increase the score of the song while they decrease the originality. I do not use seeds, I do not like the one who uses as well :p but that is my sole RP choice. If used correctly (still fresh and in fine quality) it has a lot of contribution to the song.

That’s like this, if you got anything, teach me as well. :D

Records:

At the beginning of this handbook, my aim was to create a handbook about records. I wanted to add a few things for beginners and it got out of control. ;)

Now, the required things you have to do for records:

1- Song

2- Record Contract

3- Record Studio

4- Producer

I have given information about the song part, above. The more qualified is the song, the better the result. Also song must be jammed 100%, that’s very important and must be shown great deal of care.

Record contract is one of the most important subjects about your career. Your record company can make your artist famous as well as infamous. What are the important aspects about this subject?

1. Agreement Conditions

There are two conditions in record contract. Royalty percentage and discount ratio at record studios are these two conditions. Discount ratio is 100% at most of the companies. In any case, after your first single is published, you will probably have no need for that discount. You do not need to pay attention. Royalty percentage changes from company to company. I suggest you not to get bogged down with small calculations. Most of major companies offer your 60-65% royalty where as minor companies may offer more than 70%. Think about royalty percentage after you have evaluated everything else. It is more profitable to work with a company that will pay attention to you and help you to sell millions in a short time but offers 65% royalty than to work with a company that offers 75% royalty but is only capable of restocking your singles. Videos are also a condition which is not written on contract. You should talk with your company about how many videos you can have per single beforehand.

2. Experience of Company

Experience of company is one of the most important factors. Easiest way to measure a company’s experience is checking the artists that the company works with. A company which works with famous artists is a company that has proven its experience to those artists. It is quite possible that there are no reasons for you not to accept as well. If you are in doubt, you can ask the artists about the company is working with.

3. Communication with Company

An experienced company knows what to do about the records you have sent them. What if you do not exactly know what to do? Working with a company which answers your question, shows you a road map, and helps you to sell more will be helpful for you. Before signing the contract ask about whom will attend your needs, (in some companies, the owner of the company is directly involved where as some other companies assign CEOs' to your needs) learn and do not hesitate asking questions to that person.

4. Resources of Company

Is company capable of meeting the needs of producing singles and vıdeos expenses of all artists which are signed. Do they have their own manufacturing facilities? (It may not be important now but soon it is quite possible that there will be a manufacturing facility shortage.) Research these.

After all these aspects are settled in your mind, you can sign the contract.

You have songs; you have also signed the contract. Now, you can produce your record. In order to produce a record, you’ll need a record studio. The company you are under arrangement may have a studio in the city you are in; it is possible for you to use it for free. (According to the conditions of agreement.) Though, if you have money, it is better for you to use the best studio you can find. Although the music type of studio is not important at the moment, you better produce your record at studio that shares your music type while have the chance.

After you have arranged the recording studio, you’ll need a producer. You can easily find someone with Basic Record Production skill with five stars, and if you have a artist with 3-4 members, one of the band members may improve this skill. After you have started to sell in serious numbers (around 2 million per single) you may look for a producer with more stars. There are ten stars producers. You can find them just by checking the lists.

Single:

After completing the record as well, it is high time for a single to publish this record.

In order to constant improvement, you need to produce singles on regular basis. This means two singles for each Popmundo year. In other words, your artist should write two songs for each month and send to the company in order to release a single. This is an intense tempo but after releasing a few singles you'll see the benefits both in ranking and in your wallet.

In Popomundo calendar, there are two dates which singles are mainly produced. One of those days is the day before Noel, the Wednesday when the sales are made with 50% bonus (50^th day of Popomundo) and 28 days later, 22^nd day of calendar. It is important to pay attention to these dates. If you have a fine record company, they’ll surely remind you of these days.

There are two aspects that your artist should pay attention about single. First of all is sending the songs to the company in timely manner, and second is sending fresh songs.

Sending single in timely manner means giving enough time for record company to give order manufacturing facilities. Your company will inform you about this subject. If you send your single according to the time informed by your company, you’ll have enough CDs when it is time for release date.

Sending fresh songs may be hard at first but it is an easy concept to plan in later stages. In order for a single to sell good amount of CDs, songs should be neither too famous nor too little famous. When it is the release day for single (The days we have told above, 22^nd and 50^th days.) pay attention to have the popularity of the single to be over 10%. Ideal popularity is between 15% and 18%. Pay attention not to go over 20%. If you can follow your ticket sales, it is between 50,000 and 60,000 people. If you pay attention to these numbers, you can easily catch great sales. Pay a great attention that songs would not have zero or negative popularity at the time of sales. You may have zero sales and make your artist and your company loose money.

Also it is a good thing to send a message to your company (Owner or the CEO.) after you have sent single. It gives speed to the procedure. ;)

Album:

You can release only one album in every two Popmundo year. Album is different than single. Song quality is much more important than song popularity in albums. Send your your most qualified 12 song (between 8 and 12 says the rules but I suggest stay at 12.) Especially on later stages, albums would not give you much profit as in money, though they are definitely effective at your place at ranking.

Another thing that should be considered in singles and albums is subgenre popularity. Checking the subgenre of your music genre from the lists and choosing the one which will increase your market share is important. As an example, you can use songs which have effected on popular subgenres and for albums you can add songs which have low market share in subgrenres.

video:

videos do not have a big effect on sales. They do crease the popularity of the song and help the artist. That’s why most of the record companies are not very fond of releasing videos. Though if you have done the suggestions given above, your company would not risk losing you so will offer a helping hand about videos.

There are two costs for videos, first one is the cost of production which is 10,000$ standard cost. Second cost is the one which is unseen by the artist, release cost. Relative to your fame, it may be as low as 20,000$ and goes up to millions of dollars.

If you have a video in your contract, use it. If you like to release a video out of contract, you may suggest your producer to pay the costs.

video strategy changes from artist to artist. I would suggest you to thoroughly research this subject.

Rehearsing scenes would not do anything other than getting you into the lists and make you earn achievement points. Your song will become popular in a glance and fall from grace at same speed. In my opinion, it doesn't worth it.

Even though if you don’t rehearse the scene, work with a good director. Easiest way to find a five star director is arranging the recording at bus station. There should absolutely be a director around somewhere (I have yet to see this technique failing.) and directs your video. (Director does not need to do anything, being at there is enough for him to direct.)

Teaching:

You are doing almost everything. Now your skills are improved, your singles are being released one after another, you tour like crazy. You must progress one step forward. And the way to progress forward is by teaching. In order to teach a skill, you should have five stars in that skills and have basic teaching skill. It is suggested to have basic teaching at five stars as well as advanced pedagogy at five stars. In the end, these skills will help you greatly on the long run.

You may come across a lot of people saying that Teaching system changed, now it is very hard to give lessons. Quite contrary system did not change in that direction. As long as you have five stars in teaching skills, it is no harder to reach eight stars than as it was. All it takes is a little planning. All you need to do is finding students whom lack the skill and give them lessons in pairs. After third student, you get a decrease on the income from the teaching, so two students is ideal. Reaching from five stars to seven stars requires total of eight students and two weeks. As you see, it is not such a great deal.

So, which skills should be taught?

The lessons that should be taught definitely are stage skills. Try to improve your instrument skills as soon as possible. If you are a dancer, give priority to dancing skills as it is helpful both in events and in stage. An extra one star at sex appeal will make your work much easier.

If the main event weight of the artist is over you and you are doing majority of the general events, it would be very helpful to spend some extra time on basic showmanship. Aim for six stars at first, then eight and at the end for ten stars.

Extra stars in music genre skill are helpful both in records and genre events so it is highly recommended.

After artist’s composers get six stars at stage, they may get extra stars in composing skills. Composing skills are very helpful in writing songs fast and sound. After they have improved themselves and get seven stars at composing skills, they may turn into a composing machine.

At the end, they may improve their skills used at events.

Other Aspects of The Game Which are Worthy of Notice:

1. Stay away from crime:

Do not miss a concert because of an idiotic graffiti, loan, trashing hotel room and running and keep your record clean.

2. Members joining and leaving artist:

Even if the member who leaves the artist stayed only a few second, he damages your fame greatly. Do not try this kind of things in order to make your friends gain accomplishment points. Pay attention to the people whom will join your artist.

3. If you take a good job with a nice pay in a small city, you will probably never get fired even if you are on tour. If you are not a VIP, leave the artist as you start to get money from your artist. Jobs which are not reserved for VIPs drops your star quality.

4. Pay attention to your crew, keep their morale high. Especially Publicists play an important role in sales.

5. Do not distribute artist cash other than very urgent needs and do not squander. Continuously make investments on your tour bus, do not buy any stage equipment before getting Noisy Old Lorry.

Those are which came upon my mind, according to the road you have chosen some may gain importance as some may loose. Of course, do not forget the skills that are required by the events you will perform on stage.

....and thanks to Warner Music Group, it seems to be hard to find those official videos anymore. Don´t they understand, that people might go and see gig after seeing these videos or even buy couple of original cds. My girlfriend actually did buy 3 new D.A.D. cds + dvd after their gig! :) Video about WMG. I do understand that bands have rights to their music, because I have been band member, but because of that I just think I would be just happy if more and more people would hear my music. Even most big bands now earn most of their money from gigs and actually fame and publicity are more important for bands...without those 2 things they won´t sell anything and those bands will be gone. WMG hasn´t understood that!!!! Here´s one artist who "likes" WMG.
...and thanks for YouTube and Myspace I have heard music that I would never had listened otherwise and I always buy original cds, if I like some music enough.

Originally they were called "Disneyland After Dark," but Disney didn´t like their name so they started to call themselves D.A.D. and now they seem to be D-A-D......but I keep calling them D.A.D., because that was their name when I first time heard about them. Of course this band still have their punk attitude and still use "Disneyland...." name whenever you see them live.

- I have forgotten to write about this, but we recorded 2 new songs in L.A. and those songs will be our next single, which will be released next week. Songs were written by Pekka and called "Why Did You Do It?" and "The Sky Falls." Now I ordered 300,000 copies of that single from record factory. We still have to do video for "Why did..." in New York...
